Today we begin a new adventure in our blog. Much of the material we will discuss is based upon a book entitled “Done: What Most Religions Don’t Tell You About the Bible” by Cary Schmidt. Cary is an Associate Pastor at a church in Lancaster, California and is a prolific writer. I look forward to our study together.
In the introduction of Cary’s book he asks this question:
Are you willing for a moment to consider the thought that God truly does exist and He cares about you? Are you willing to see reliable evidence and consider what it might mean for your life…Suppose for a moment that there truly is a God. Suppose that He created you and loves you intensely. Imagine that He has a perfect, eternal purpose for you, but that you are held hostage by a ruthless enemy, whom you cannot see, and who is bent on destroying you. Imagine that this God is on a rescue mission to save you, and this is all going on behind the scenes of your life—behind the visible wall of your day to day existence.
Are you willing to consider that? This is the truth! God does love YOU. He is on a rescue mission, not just to take you to Heaven one day, but to give you eternal and abundant life right now! This life is in His Son, Jesus Christ.
When God created you, he created you to be more than just a body! In 1 Thessalonians 5:23 Paul refers to “…spirit and soul and body…” In James 2:26a James says, “For as the body apart from the spirit is dead… (ESV)” Someone said, “You are not a body with a soul, but rather you are a soul with a body!” Scripture teaches us that this soul is eternal and will continue to exist after our body is separated from it through physical death.
This means you are not a freak biological accident! You were knit together in your mother’s womb by your Creator (Psalm 139:13). He values you, and He has given you purpose for existence. He has given you significance and meaning in life. You are not the sum of random events strung together by time and chance! There are a couple of things that remind us of this truth.
First of all, conscience demonstrates that we are more than a body. Everyone, to one degree or another, has an internal sense of right and wrong. Even if one’s sense of right and wrong is flawed, the concept is still there. Where did this concept come from? It came from our Creator!
Worship also demonstrates that we are more than a body. Humans all over the planet worship something. Missionaries have found tribes in the deepest jungles that have a concept of a creator/god, and they have a concept of worship. Again this concept may be tragically flawed, but the concept is there. Cary says, “Even the atheist who denies God’s existence chooses to worship self and self becomes god.” Why do we worship? We worship because we were created by God to worship. Everyone is going to worship something to try to fulfill the God-sized void in their life that only He can fill.
So if you are “more than a body,” what is your body? Your body is simply the dwelling place of the real you! In 2 Corinthians 5:1 our body is referred to as a “tent.” One day the real you is going to vacate this tent. This is what we call “death.” Your body will cease to breathe, move and function; but the real you will continue.
You have a loving Creator who has revealed Himself to you through your conscience and through creation. He has revealed Himself to you through His written Word (the Bible) and through the Living Word (Jesus Christ-see John 1:1). Now He invites you to have a relationship with Him. This relationship is only possible through complete reliance upon Jesus Christ. He laid down His life for you and took it up again three days later. He wants to place within your body His life that is eternal and abundant! One day, when your soul vacates your body you will be able to enjoy His presence forever in Heaven and enjoy a new body without the consequences and curse of sin.
Yes, you are more than a body…you are a soul that can have a personal relationship with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
